Why Ford SUVs are Perfect for Outdoor Adventure in Northern California

Few joys in life are as pure and uncompromised as the feeling of surrounding yourself with nature, getting away from worries and stress in the great outdoors, and diving into an outdoor adventure. Whether you love going camping and hiking, hitting an off-road trail with your vehicle, or spending a week or more overlanding with nothing but you, your vehicle, and some supplies, the most important thing is that you’re prepared. Having the right tools and equipment is vital when you leave civilization behind, which means more than a comfortable backpack, sturdy pair of shoes, and plenty of water—it also means having the right vehicle.
If you are looking at SUVs for sale with an eye toward your next great adventure or doing some off-roading on the weekend, then you owe it to yourself to check out what Ford has to offer. Not only can you find Timberline models that transform beloved SUVs like the Explorer and Expedition into vehicles worthy of their name, but the incredible Ford Bronco takes off-road performance and capability to another level entirely. Let's dive a little deeper into these adventurous models to see what sets them apart from the crowd.
The Importance of the Right Off-Road SUV
Any serious hiker or camper understands the importance of being prepared for where you’re going and having the right equipment. Heading out for a hike in the desert without a lot of water, for example, is a recipe for disaster. Similarly, going camping somewhere that you have to hike in and out of with a backpack that doesn’t fit can lead to sore muscles, while not having the right tent for where you’re going can also be a major problem. Trying to go off-roading or overlanding in a vehicle that’s not up to the challenge can be equally disastrous and even potentially dangerous for you and your passengers. This is something Ford clearly understands based on the designs and engineering of some of its vehicles, particularly those meant for leaving the road behind. That doesn’t mean that every Ford SUV is perfect for going off-road, but if you choose one built for that purpose, then you know you have a vehicle that you can count on. In the same way that a Ford truck like the F-150 is built to help people get some serious work done, models like the Ford Bronco are engineered to handle anything the trail throws at you. With one of these vehicles, you can tackle any trail out there, reach your favorite campsite, and take some long overlanding trips that let you escape the routines of the modern world. Ford also offers a number of accessories and options for its off-road SUVs that let you take your adventure even further.
Check Out Ford's Timberline Models
Of the Ford SUVs currently available, two of our favorites for light off-roading or camping are the Explorer and Expedition. These are both three-row SUVs with seating inside for seven or eight passengers, though the Expedition is a larger full-size model. We like having a big SUV for camping since it gives you a lot of space to load up the supplies and equipment you need—even things like bikes and kayaks can come along for the ride with one of these large models. That being said, not every Explorer and Expedition is up to the task; if you want to leave the road behind, then we suggest looking at a Timberline model. With the 2024 Ford Explorer Timberline, for example, you get seating for up to seven passengers and a bold look that is perfect for heading outdoors. The unique Timberline grille features a Dark Carbonized Gray appearance that sets it apart from other models, plus you can get available Ford Performance auxiliary lights installed here at our dealership for better illumination at night when you’re far from city lights. You also get a standard TORSEN limited-slip rear axle with the Explorer Timberline, along with steel underbody skid plates to help you stay in control on rough terrain and protect the underside of your SUV. The 2024 Ford Expedition Timberline comes with similar features that make it a fantastic pick for going off-road, such as a rough road suspension with 10.6 inches of ground clearance, letting it climb over obstacles that would leave a lot of other large SUVs stuck. One of the things we love about this model is that you can still get seating for up to eight passengers in the Expedition Timberline, making it a fantastic choice if you have a big family or group of friends you want to bring along with you. With a high-output engine, skid plates, and four-wheel drive with a Terrain Management System, the Expedition Timberline is ready to take you just about anywhere you want to go.
